Rev Nguyen Van Ly is still indomitable despite imprisonment

            Sáng ngày 09-07-2009, chị ruột của linh mục Nguyễn Văn Lý là bà Nguyễn Thị Hiểu và một người cháu gái đã từ Quảng Biên ra trại K1, xã Ba Sao, huyện Kim Bảng, thị xã Phủ Lý, tỉnh Hà Nam để thăm vị tù nhân lương tâm. Cuộc gặp bắt đầu từ 9g và kéo dài đến gần 10g30.

in the morning of July 09,2009, Madame Nguyen thi Hieu, Rev Nguyen Van Ly’s sister and a niece of his from Quangbien came to prison camp K1, Basao Commune, Kimbang District, Phuly Town, Hanam Province to visit the prisoner of conscience. The visit lasted from 9:00AM to 10:30AM approximately.

            Sau khi hỏi han tin tức gia đình và bạn bè, linh mục Lý cho biết:

After asking for family and friend’s information, Rev Ly said that,

            Hôm 13-05-2009, phái đoàn 6 người thuộc Ủy hội Tự do Tôn giáo Quốc tế của Hoa Kỳ đã đến thăm cha tại trại. Ban đầu cuộc gặp được ấn định là 30 phút nhưng rốt cục kéo dài một tiếng rưỡi. Vừa chào hỏi xong, linh mục Lý phân trần:

On May 13, 2009 6 person delegation of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom USCIRF visited him at the prison. Initially, the visit had set for 30 minutes but eventually it lasted for one and a half hour.  Right after exchanging greetings, Rev Ly explained that,

            - Quý vị đừng thấy tôi mặc áo tù sọc dưa này [xin xem hình bên dưới, do phái đoàn chụp] mà bảo tôi chấp nhận mình là phạm nhân. Tôi đã không muốn gặp Quý vị với bộ đồ tù này, nhưng vì nghĩ tình Quý vị đã vất vả xin phép nhà nước rồi lặn lội đến đây thăm tôi, nên tôi mới nén lòng mặc nó mà ra tiếp Quý vị.

Please don’t assume that I’ve admitted myself as a guilty person despite of the fact that I’m wearing this stripe outfit (see picture below captured by the delegation). I did not want to receive you while wearing this prisoner outfit but I thought that you have work very hard to get this government’s permission and underwent long distance to pay me a visit here, I reluctantly wore it to see you.

            Trước tiên phái đoàn hỏi là Tòa Tổng giám mục Huế, kể từ 30-03-2007 cho tới hôm nay, đã đi thăm linh mục bao nhiêu lần. Nghe cha Lý đáp là “hai”, phái đoàn cười !?! Lại hỏi: “Thế còn gia đình?” - “Hai tháng thăm một lần” - “Vậy là vẫn ít” - “Gia đình tôi ở xa, cách đây hơn cả 1000 cây số!”. Tay công an canh gác -thiếu tá Nam- xen vào: “Nhưng hàng tháng vẫn có gởi quà! Yêu cầu Anh Lý nói điều này cho phái đoàn rõ” !?! Chế độ ta nhân đạo lắm chứ !?!

First the delegation asked him that so far how many time the Archbishop of Hue visited him. The delegation laughed when Father Ly said “two”!?! Another question: “How about family?” _ “bimonthly” - “it’s still little” – “My family is more than 1000 km far from here!”. The guard officer – Major Nam- injected: “but they were allowed to send goods to him every month! Mr. Ly, you are required to tell this clearly to the delegation”!?! How humanitarian our regime is!?! 

            Phái đoàn hỏi tiếp: “Linh mục có muốn phiên tòa được mở lại có luật sư không?” vì họ đã rõ vụ xử án ngày 30-03-2007 tại Huế là phi pháp, quái đản, vì không luật sư, không thân nhân, không nhân chứng, kể cả không quyền tự biện hộ. Linh mục Lý trả lời:

The delegation asked: “Do you want to re-open the trial with the presence of an attorney?” Because the delegation knew that the trial on March 30, 2007 was unlawful, monstrous, without attorney, nor relatives nor witness, even without self defense right. Rev Ly answered:

            - Theo luật Việt Nam, nếu muốn kháng án thì chỉ trong vòng 15 ngày. Nhưng nay đã hơn hai năm rồi. Kháng án chi được nữa!!! Mà có luật sư cũng chỉ từng ấy!!!

-          According to Vietnam Law, there is 15 day window for appeal. However it has been more than two years passing by. How feasible it is for an appeal!!! Even with the presence of an attorney, it would mean nothing!!!!

            - Chúng tôi sẽ yêu cầu nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam trả tự do ngay cho linh mục, sau đó phải để linh mục đi làm việc tự do, không được quản chế!

-          We’ll demand the Vietnam government to release you immediately, and let you conduct your work freely, without surveillance.

            Linh mục Lý nhận định với bà chị (và cháu gái): “Họ nói thế chứ em không hy vọng gì, vì lúc này em đang căng với nhà nước lắm!” Rồi cha kể tiếp: “Cách đây 2 hôm, tức ngày 07-07, lần đầu tiên em được nhà tù cho đọc báo Nhân Dân. Số báo đọc lần đầu này ra ngày 06-06, trong đó có bài “Một việc làm sai lầm”. Tác giả nói hôm 1-7-2009, một số Thượng nghị sĩ Hoa Kỳ đã khơi lại phiên tòa xử em qua bức thư gửi Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết. Họ yêu cầu xem lại những thiếu sót nghiêm trọng trong tiến trình bắt giữ, xét xử và giam em cùng các bạn. Họ còn yêu cầu nhà nước phải lập tức trả tự do vô điều kiện cho em và cho phép em trở về nhà, tiếp tục công việc linh mục, không bị hạn chế các quyền tự do đã được quốc tế công nhận.

 

Rev Ly talked to his sister (and his niece): “ they said so but I have no hope, because the tension between the government and myself is very high so far!” He added: “Two days ago, i.e., July 07, it was the first time that I was allowed to read the Nhan Dan Newspapers. In that newspaper of July 06, I saw the article titled : “a Mistaken deed”. The author said  on July 01,2009, there was a letter sent to President Nguyen Minh Triet by some US senators which recalled the trial. They required the VN government to review some serious shortcomings in the process of the arrest, trial and imprisonment of myself and others. They also required the government to release me immediately and unconditionally and let me conduct my work as a priest without limitation of rights which are internationally recognised.

 

            “Em thấy đòi hỏi này là chính đáng và em xin cảm ơn các Thượng nghị sĩ. Tuy nhiên bài báo đó có hai điểm sai lầm mà kẻ đáng trách không phải là tác giả nhưng là viên Tổng biên tập [xin mở ngoặc: 700 tờ báo Việt Nam hiện chỉ có một Tổng biên tập duy nhất!?!]. Một là chi tiết: “Nguyễn Văn Lý xô ngã hai công an áp giải”.Không hề có chuyện đó! Khi bị hai công an xốc nách hai bên đẩy vào tòa án [xin xem hình bên dưới], em chỉ rì lại, không chịu đi, để bày tỏ sự phản kháng phiên tòa, chứ với hai tay bị cùm thì làm chi mà xô ngã được họ. Láo! Họ giữ chặt, bóp chặt đến độ ngày hôm sau, hai cánh tay em còn bị tím bầm. Chi tiết thứ hai: “đạp đổ vành móng ngựa”.Đúng là em có đưa chân đá vào nó, khiến nó lệch một chút [băng video còn ghi lại rõ ràng], để tiếp tục bày tỏ sự phản đối và đả đảo tòa án phi pháp, vô luật của Cộng sản. Làm chi mà có chuyện vành móng ngựa bị đạp đổ! Chị và cháu về nhớ nói lại với mọi người là đừng bao giờ đọc báo Nhân dân cả! Đó là một tờ báo nói láo chuyên đời. (Vừa nói, linh mục Lý vừa đập mạnh xuống bàn, trước mắt viên thiếu tá công an canh gác!).

 

“I believe it’s a right demand and I would like to thanks those senators. However, the article has two untrue details. It is not the author but the editor who is condemnable [parenthesised by the author: It is the sole General Editor for 700 newspapers in Vietnam!?!]. The first one is “Nguyen Van Ly pushed two police officers escorting him to fall down”. It’s a lie! When I was forcefully carried in to the court (see picture below), I just dragged back to show my protest against the court. How could I push them down while I was in handcuffs. They kept me so tightly that the next day both of my hands were still bruised. Second detail is “trampling down the bar”. It’s true that I kicked it by my foot, causing it askew a little bit (clearly captured by a video recorder), to keep protesting against the unlawful court of the communist. There was nothing like the bar falling down! Upon your return, You two may talk to everybody that they should never read the Nhan Dan Newspaper! It’s the newspaper of lies. (as speaking, Rev Ly beat his hand forcefully on the table in front of the Major guard!) 

 

            “Một chuyện đáng phản đối khác mà em muốn nêu ra đây là nội quy “cấm truyền đạo” của nhà tù. Quốc tế người ta có bao giờ cấm như vậy đâu! Thậm chí người ta còn cho phép đem sách Thánh kinh của đạo (Công giáo, Hồi giáo, Tin lành giáo) vào tù, còn cho phép tổ chức việc cầu nguyện theo tôn giáo mình nữa”. Quay sang viên công an, linh mục Lý nói thẳng: “Tôi phản đối quy định này”.

 

“There is another objectionable rule of the prison such as ”prohibition of religious propaganda”. There is no such a rule in the world! Prisoners are even allowed to bring in bible books of their religions (eg. Catholics, Muslim, Protestant), and to organise prayers according to their own religion”. Turned to the officer, Rev Ly said directly “I oppose this rule” .

            Quay lại với hai người thân, linh mục Lý bảo: “Xin về nói với bà con là đừng trông mong tôi ra tù sớm. Cứ chịu khó đi thăm nuôi cho đến năm 2015. Lo giữ gìn sức khỏe để mà đi thăm! Cũng đừng sợ tôi sẽ lung lay, chao đảo! Có bao giờ tôi nhận mình là phạm nhân, mắc tội với nhà nước, với luật pháp Cộng sản đâu! Bằng cớ là từ mấy lâu nay, họ bắt tôi cứ ba tháng làm kiểm điểm một lần. Có chi mà kiểm điểm! Tôi kiểm điểm nhà nước này thì có! Nhưng vì họ ép quá, nên mỗi lần như thế, tôi đều viết vỏn vẹn 5 chữ: “Tôi vui vẻ ở tù!”

Turning back to his relatives, Rev Ly said: “ on returning home, please talk to people not looking forward to my early release but going on visiting me until 2015. Please take care of themselves so that they may go on visiting me in the prison! Don’t be afraid that  I’ll be shaken! Never I plead guilty in front of the Communist government! The proof is that since then, they have kept forcing me to write the self review every three months. I have nothing to be reviewed! I’d rather review this government instead! But because of their pressure, every time they required my review paper, I wrote 5 words only: “I’m pleased to stay imprisoned”

            [Xin mở một dấu ngoặc: Ngoài 1 Tuyên ngôn, 9 Lời Kêu gọi, 2 Lời Chứng trước các cơ quan quốc tế mà linh mục Lý từng viết ra từ cuối năm 2000 đến đầu năm 2001, thì kể từ ngày 27-02-2001 tới ngày 09-05-2001, mỗi lần công an đến giáo xứ An Truyền, Huế, để chất vấn, lập biên bản, thì linh mục Lý lại lập biên bản về công an và ĐCSVN, tổng cộng 19 biên bản, với tiêu đề “Cộng hòa Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam: Thiếu Độc lập, Mất Tự do, Không Hạnh phúc” lên án ĐCSVN tội phản quốc, vi phạm nhân quyền, chà đạp tín ngưỡng, ức hiếp các Giáo hội (xin xem một biên bản tiêu biểu bên dưới). Có lẽ đây là trường hợp vô tiền khoáng hậu trong chế độ phi nhân gian dối và bạo tàn như chế độ CSVN].

[Parenthesized by the author: besides one statement, 9 appeals, 2 testimonies in front of international bodies wrote by Rev Ly during second half of 2000 and first half of 2001, he wrote in total 19 notes every time when the police came to An Truyen parish, Hue City to interrogate him. He titled his minutes as “ Socialist Republic of Vietnam: Lack of Independence, Loss of Freedom, Unhappiness”, condemning the VN Communist Party  as national traitor, violating human rights, trampling on religious belief, oppressing Churches. (Please see a typical minute below). Perhaps it is the sole case that ever happened in such a deceitful inhuman, regime like the VN Communist one],

            Linh mục Lý cũng cho hay mình có nghe tin Hội đồng Giám mục Việt Nam đi Rôma viếng mộ hai thánh Tông đồ, có biết vụ việc Luật sư Lê Công Định cùng nhóm bạn rồi ông Trần Anh Kim và Nguyễn Tiến Trung bị nhà cầm quyền CS bắt. Linh mục nhận định đó là những công dân yêu nước, việc đấu tranh dân chủ của họ đáng ca ngợi và ủng hộ. CS vì sợ mà bắt họ thôi!

Rev Ly also mentioned that he heard about the trip of Vietnam Conference of Catholic Bishops visiting Apostles’ Graves in Rome, about the arrest of Attorney Le Cong Dinh and his friends, about the arrests of Tran Anh Kim and Nguyen Tien Trung. Rev Ly said that they were patriotic citizens, their protest for democracy should be admired and supported. The Communists have arrested them because they simply fear them.

            Sau khi nói chuyện được một giờ, viên công an thúc giục linh mục Lý đi vào. Nhưng cũng như mọi lần, linh mục cự nự lại và ngồi nói chuyện tiếp 30 phút nữa.

After one hour talking, the police urged Rev. Ly to withdraw. But like other times, he pushed back and went on talking for another 30 minutes.

            Giã từ bà chị và cô cháu gái, linh mục dặn lần sau nhớ mua cho mình thuốc trị cao huyết áp hoặc gởi cho thức ăn gì giảm huyết áp cao (nay có khi lên tới 16), vì nếu chỉ gởi dụng cụ đo huyết áp (kiểu y tá bác sĩ thường dùng) và dụng cụ xông mũi như lần này thì không đủ. Linh mục cho biết: thời gian gần đây, trại giam có cho linh mục một số thuốc men nhưng chẳng có mấy hiệu quả nào. Điều này chẳng có gì lạ. Ở ngoài đời, thuốc do bảo hiểm y tế cấp còn chẳng ra chi, huống nữa là trong nhà tù cộng sản. Trường hợp bệnh tình luật sư Lê Thị Công Nhân hiện nay với sự chữa chạy tồi tệ trong nhà tù chứng nhận thêm chuyện ấy. Điều đó cho thấy tình trạng sức khỏe của vị tù nhân lương tâm đang có vấn đề. Xin đồng bào khắp nơi, đặc biệt giới y sĩ, tiếp tục quan tâm theo dõi, vận động, đồng thời giúp lời cầu nguyện.

On saying goodbye to his sister and niece, Rev Ly asked them to supply him with medications or medical food for high blood pressure treatment (his systolic blood pressure sometimes mounted upt 160mmhg), because the measurement itself is not enough. He said that recently the prison has provided him with some medications but they are not effective at all. This is not new. Even outside the prison, medications provided by  Government’s Health Insurance system are never adequate. Let alone that of Communist prison. The case of Lawyer Le Thi Cong Nhan’s poor health in the prison is another proof of that. This shows that the health of our Conscience Prisoner is in question. Dear compatriots everywhere , particularly Physicians, please keep monitoring, supporting and praying for Farther Ly.

The VN Communist Banned the Priest’s Right of Preaching

 

In the name of righteous conscience of human beings and International Human Right Organizations, I the undersigned Priest Thadeus Nguyen Van Ly, Vicar of Antruyen Parish is noting down following deeds of VC officers including:

 

1, Mr. Pha, Head of Anti-spy Unit, Police Department of Thua Thien Province

2,Mr. Thuan, Deputy Head of Anti-spy Unit, Police Department of Thua Thien Province

3, Mr. Dang Cong Dien, Chairman of People’s Committee of Phu An Commune, Phu Vang

4, Mr. Quang, Deputy Head of Police Department of Phu An Commune. Phu Vang, TT-H

 

and more than 20 policemen raided in the An Truyen Parish requiring to minute me because after the evening Mass on March 17, 2001, at 19:00, I explained to my parishioners about the Vatican’s activities on Justice & Peace in the world and about the organization of 180 Catholic’s Embassies in the world.... However, those VC officers presumed that I had preached on political matters.

 

This minute was done at 10:00PM March 18, 2001 at An Truyen Parish. It was read aloud in front of 200 parishioners and people concerned.
