FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 18, 2007

In advance of Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet’s meeting with President Bush on June 22nd, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Ngai was invited by Vice President Richard Cheney, National Security Advisor Dennis Wilder and high level State Department officials to Washington, D.C. for consultations on Thursday, June 14.

Dr. Nguyen, a physician and cardiologist in San Jose, California, is a key
member of the Democratic Party of Vietnam, which advocates democracy for Vietnam and an improvement in human rights and religious freedom for its people.

In the upcoming June 22nd Oval Office meeting, Dr. Nguyen suggested to Vice President Cheney, National Security Advisor Wilder and U.S. State Department officials that President Bush advise President Triet that:

1.  much of the progress made in the last few years in Vietnam is being erased in a renewed movement of oppression
2.  Vietnam must make substantive improvements in the protection of religious freedom, free speech and other basic human rights
3.  all political and religious prisoners who are still being jailed in Vietnam
must be set free, unconditionally
4.  private citizens should be allowed to have freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of congregation and organization, and free and fair elections with international observation
5.  Vietnam should stop repressing the movements for democracy inside Vietnam and allow the various political parties be free to practice political activities

Though President Triet wants the focus of his Oval Office meeting to be on trade issues, Dr. Nguyen was assured by everyone that President Bush will discuss improving human rights and religious freedom for the people of  Vietnam.

Dr. Nguyen also visited with various members of Congress on this trip, including Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Congressman Ed Royce, thanking them for their continued support of improved human rights and religious freedom in Vietnam.
