San Francisco: đón, đuổi những ngọn đuốc

Năm nay Thế vận hội sẽ diễn ra tại Bắc Kinh vào mùa hè.

Ai bảo thể thao và chính trị phải tách rời là đã quên lịch sử: Berlin 1936, Munich 1972, Moskva 1980, Los Angeles 1984 là những Thế vận hội đã mang nhiều dấu ấn của chính trị.

Một lần nữa, chính trị lại không thể tách rời thể thao. Cuộc rước Đuốc Thế vận đang làm nổi lên một làn sóng phản đối chính quyền cộng sản ở đất nước đông dân nhất thế giới này và đòi hỏi Bắc Kinh cải tiến thực trạng nhân quyền của họ.

Trong mấy ngày vừa qua, thành phố San Francisco đã là điểm đến của 3 ngọn đuốc, tất cả đều mang những ý nghĩa cao đẹp: Đuốc Nhân quyền, Đuốc Tự do Tibet và Đuốc Thế vận hội 2008.

Shame on China!  They brought in busloads of people from Los Angeles who were paid to march around with the communist flag pretending they were local supporters of China.  They were busted by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Human Rights Torch Relay aims to draw attention to human rights abuses by the Chinese Communist regime before the 2000 Being Olympics, while highlighting the persecution of the Falun Gong, the most severely persecuted group in China today.

The Human Rights Torch 6K Run and Rally was in Union Square. San Francisco, at 11 a.m. on April 5.

Mối quan hệ của chúng ta với Trung Quốc là quan trọng, và chúng ta đánh giá cao khả năng hợp tác của chúng ta với nhà cầm quyền Trung Quốc trải rộng trong các lãnh vực chiến lược, kinh tế và ngoại giao. Nhưng nhà cầm quyền Trung Quốc phải hiểu là trong thế giới tân tiến của chúng ta, cách thức một quốc gia đối xử với dân chúng của mình là một đối tượng chính đáng của sự quan tâm quốc tế. Trung Quốc đã ký kết nhiều thoả ước quốc tế đặt sự đối xử của Trung Quốc đối với dân chúng là đối tượng của quan tâm chính đáng này, không còn là vấn đề thuộc về chủ quyền quốc gia. Để được làm một thành phần chủ yếu có trách nhiệm trong thế giới tân tiến, một chính quyền cũng còn phải có trách nhiệm trong nước, để bảo vệ, chứ không phải để chà đạp, các quyền của người dân chính nước mình.

Tôi lên án sự đàn áp tàn bạo của nhà cầm quyền Trung Quốc và sự tiếp tục trấn át tại Tây Tạng những người chỉ muốn thực hành tín ngưỡng và bảo vệ văn hóa và di sản của họ. Tôi đã theo dõi kỹ lưỡng Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma và tôi tin rằng Ông là một người của hoà bình, một người phản ảnh được những hy vọng và hứng khởi của nhân dân Tây Tạng. Tôi thúc đẩy chính quyền của nước Cộng Hòa Nhân Dân Trung Quốc hãy đề cặp thẳng nguyên nhân gốc rễ của sự bất ổn tại Tây Tạng bằng cách mở cuốc đối thoại chân thành với Đức Đạt Lai Lạt Ma, nhắm đến việc cho Tây Tạng được tự trị nhiều hơn. Nó không phục vụ gì cho nhà cầm quyền Trung Quốc, và chắc chắn là không phục vụ gì đối với dân chúng Trung Hoa, khi mà Hoa Kỳ và các quốc gia dân chủ khác giả vờ là sự đàn áp nhân quyền tại Trung Quốc không tạo sự quan tâm nào đối với chúng ta. ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement on China and the Olympic Games:

"Our relationship with China is important, and we value our ability to cooperate with the Chinese government on a wide variety of strategic, economic, and diplomatic fronts. But the Chinese government needs to understand that in our modern world, how a nation treats its citizens is a legitimate subject of international concern. China has signed numerous international agreements that make China 's treatment of its citizens a subject of legitimate international concern, not just a matter of national sovereignty. To be a responsible stakeholder in the modern world, a government must also be responsible at home, in protecting, not trampling, the rights of its people.

"I deplore the violent crackdown by Chinese authorities and the continuing oppression in Tibet of those merely wishing to practice their faith and preserve their culture and heritage. I have listened carefully to the Dalai Lama and am convinced he is a man of peace who reflects the hopes and aspirations of Tibetans. I urge the government of the People's Republic of China to address the root causes of unrest in Tibet by opening a genuine dialogue with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, aimed at granting greater autonomy. I urge the Chinese authorities to ensure peaceful protest is not met with violence, to release monks and others detained for peacefully expressing their views and to allow full outside access to Tibet .

"I understand and respect Prime Minister Brown's decision not to attend the Olympic opening ceremonies. I believe President Bush should evaluate his participation in the ceremonies surrounding the Olympics and, based on Chinese actions, decide whether it is appropriate to attend. If Chinese policies and practices do not change, I would not attend the opening ceremonies. It does no service to the Chinese government, and certainly no service to the people of China , for the United States and other democracies to pretend that the suppression of rights in China does not concern us. It does, will and must concern us."

Olympic Torch Arrives in Oman, Pakistan Pledges Tight Security During
 its Leg 
Olympic torch, coming from Tanzania, expected a protest-free visit 
 An unidentified Omani man assists with preparations for the Olympic
 torch relay on Monday, in Muscat, Oman, 13 Apr 2008The Olympic torch
 arrived in Oman Monday where it is expected to have a protest-free
 visit - the torch's sole Middle East stop on its way to Beijing.
 At a low-key ceremony in the capital, Muscat, the sports minister, Ali
 bin Massoud bin Ali al-Sunaidi, and representatives of the Chinese
 diplomatic mission greeted the torch upon its arrival from Tanzania.
 Last week, the torch relay drew large and chaotic protests in London,
 Paris and San Francisco. Recent stops in Buenos Aires and Tanzania
 passed without major incident. Dozens of Omani athletes will carry the torch on a 20-kilometer
 route Monday through Muscat and along its scenic waterfront.
 
The torch's next stop, April 16, will be the Pakistani capital of
 Islamabad. 
 
Several legs of the international torch relay have had to be rerouted
 and shortened to ensure security.
 
Officials in Australia have said they are changing the relay route
 through the capital, Canberra, to enable tighter security there. The
 torch is scheduled to arrive in Canberra April 24.
 
During a visit to Beijing today, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf
 condemned the protests that plagued the torch relay on stops in Europe
 and the United States.
 
He criticized Western leaders and the media for politicizing the
 Olympics, and pledged to maintain security for the flame when it is in
 His country later this week.
