Sau cuộc diễn hành là phần nghi lễ chính thức công bố địa điểm tương lai của Viện Bảo Tàng Thuyền Nhân và phần tiếp tân. Cuộc diễn hành sẽ bắt đầu lúc 1g30 tại trung Tâm Người Việt Canada, 249 đuờng Rochester, đi qua các đường Gladstone, Bronson, Somerset, và chấm dứt tại góc đuờng Preston, địa điểm Viện Bảo Tàng Thuyền Nhân sẽ đuợc xây cất. Trong 3 năm qua, cộng đồng người Việt tại vùng Thủ Đô Canada đã cộng tác với Hội Tháng Di Sản Á Châu Ottawa và các đồng Á Châu khác trong việc tổ chức một số sinh hoạt trong Tháng Di Sản Á Châu vào tháng 5 mỗi năm. Cuộc diễn hành sẽ kết thúc chương trình Tháng Di Sản Á Châu của cộng đồng năm nay. Năm 2009 cũng đánh dấu 30 năm ngày thành lập Chương Trình 4000, một chương trình do bà Marion Dewar, cố Đô Trưởng Ottawa, đề xuớng năm 1979 nhằm bảo lãnh người tị nạn Đông Dương, trong đó phần lớn là người Việt, bỏ nuớc ra đi tìm tự do, trốn khỏi chế độ độc tài Cộng Sản sau khi chiến tranh Việt Nam chấm dứt. Khi đó hàng ngàn người tị nạn đang sống bơ vơ tại Đông Nam Á vì chưa đuợc các nuớc Tây Phương tiếp nhận cho định cư. Tại các thành phố khác cũng có những chương trình đón nhận người tị nạn tương tự, chẳng hạn như chuơng trình Operation Lifeline tại Toronto. Hơn 20 năm sau khi chiến tranh chấm dứt, vẫn còn một số người Việt tị nạn sống vất vuởng tại Phi Luật Tân. Gần 300 người đuợc định cư tại Canada trong Chương trình Nhân Đạo và Bác Ái do chính phủ loan báo vào tháng 5, 2007. Qua chương trình Tới bờ tự do do Liên Hội Người Việt Canada thành lập với sự hỗ trợ của các hội đoàn như SOS Viet Phi, VOICE (Vietnamese Overseas Initiative for Community Empowerment, based in the U.S.), và các hội đoàn người Việt tại Canada, Hoa Kỳ, và Úc, 266 trong số 274 người nộp đơn đã đuợc nhận vào Canada. Trong số này, 254 người đã tới Canada và được các nhóm bảo trợ giúp tìm nhà, tìm việc làm, và các công việc khác để tái xây dựng cuộc sống. Cuộc ra đi tìm tự do của người Việt tị nạn sẽ đuợc ghi lại tại Viện Bảo Tàng Thuyền Nhân, một chuơng trình do Liên Hội Người Việt Canada đề xướng năm 2005 với hai mục đích sau đây: • Trình bÀy các d» kiŒn lÎch sº cûa cu¶c di cÜ tìm t¿ do cûa ngÜ©i ViŒt tÎ nån, trong Çó phÀn l§n là thuyŠn nhân, và s¿ Çón nhÆn cûa th‰ gi§i; • Quäng bá các Çóng góp cûa c¶ng ÇÒng ngÜ©i ViŒt vào các quÓc gia ÇÎnh cÜ. Viện Bảo Tàng Thuyền Nhân, với một ngân khoản dự trù 2 triệu Gia kim, sẽ đuợc xây cất tại góc đuờng Preston và Somerset, trung tâm thành phố Ottawa, đối diện Đài Kỷ Niệm Việt Nam (do Liên Hội xây cất vào năm 2005) với các phòng triển lãm, văn phòng làm việc, hội trường, và phòng họp, tổng cộng khoảng một ngàn mét vuông. Viện Bảo Tàng Thuyền Nhân cũng sẽ có chỗ cho các cơ sở thương mại thuê để lấy tiền trang trải chi phí bảo trì và điều hành về lâu dài. Với số tiền 750 ngàn Gia kim đã thâu đuợc hoặc được hứa chắc chắn sẽ đóng góp, Liên Hội đã mua đuợc đất để xây Viện Bảo Tàng. Hợp đồng mua đất đã đuợc ký vào ngày 30-4-2009, đúng 34 năm sau ngày 2 triệu người Việt bỏ nước ra đi tìm tự do. Chương trình 4000 là một sự kiện lịch sử chứng tỏ người dân có thể sát cánh làm việc để đáp ứng một cách hữu hiệu với những cuộc khủng hoảng lớn. Đây là một tấm gương sáng về sự dấn thân và hợp tác trong quần chúng cho các thế hệ mai sau. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For further information call Kym Brady 408‐6917826 lv2write@sbcglobal.net (San Jose, CA May 10, 2009) The Vietnam War may be a fading memory for many people, but the stories of how it impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and American soldiers are being preserved by a creative group of young video producers in San Jose, California. They will be sharing a selection of short videos produced with a cross section of Vietnamese Americans from their community at a special public benefit screening and dinner event that will be held in the University Room at San Jose State University, on Sunday, May 17, from 5 PM to 7:30 PM. The Vietnamese American Heritage Project is mobilizing tech savvy high school and college students to use computers to document the personal reflections of the “Boat People” who fled Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam War, braving the high seas and attacks by predatory pirates to find their way to freedom and a new life in America. “Our history books stop with the fall of Saigon and the end of the war, “ said Cang Le, a 22 year old college student who started the program two years ago. “We don’t really know what our parents and other members of the older generation went through so that their children and grandchildren could have the opportunity to grow up in America.” Cang was born in Vietnam, and moved to the US with his parents and his two younger brothers when he was 8. His father served in the South Vietnamese Army, and spent 6 years in a concentration camp. Cang’s brothers, Cuong and Binh, and his sister, Jennifer, age 12, started the program as a way to honor their parents, and to encourage other Vietnamese Americans to learn and share their history. Cang says he wants the project to break down barriers between the generations, as well as to build a bridges between the Vietnamese American community and Vietnam War veterans, including those who served in the South Vietnam Army like his father. “It is still very painful for many of these people to share their memories, but we believe that they must come forward and tell us their stories if we and they are going to be able to truly complete the healing process,” said Cuong Le, who is majoring in Health Sciences at San Jose State, and believes the program has significant therapeutic value for those who participate. The May 17th screening will include videos produced by San Jose City Councilwoman Madison Nguyen, Dao Van Binh, a writer and activist who was blacklisted by the Vietnamese government, Kim Delevett, Community Affairs Manager for Southwest Airlines, Hugh Nguyen, a local businessman who survived a harrowing experience as a “boat child,” Khanh‐Hoa Wong , a teacher of ethnic studies at Evergreen College, and Jennifer Le, a middle school student who has created a nationally recognized youth program to combat childhood obesity.. “This project is a way of opening people’s eyes to Silicon Valley’s incredibly rich cultural diversity and how our youth are using technology to help educate and inspire others as a way to deepen mutual respect and understanding between people of difference viewpoints,” said Council Memer Nguyen, whose story was produced both in Vietnamese and English. The youth leaders will be traveling to Washington, DC later this month for meetings with the Smithsonian Institution, and to share their work at the annual Stories of Service Memorial Day conference. Their videos are being archived on the project web site and at History San Jose, where the students plan to carry out a series of workshops during the coming year. The program will also be promoted this fall to local area schools as a Service Learning project.
