Mr. Nguyen Huu Hieu was the first to publish the poetry of Nguyen Chi Thien in book form in while he was imprisoned at the Hoa Lo (Hanoi Hilton) prison after smuggling his anti-regime poetry to the British Embassy in 1979. The poets Nguyen Chi Thien and Phung Cung were imprisoned together in Yen Bai "re-education" labor camp during the 1970s. After Mr. Thien's release in 1991 due to international pressure, this reunion was held at the home of the poet Phung Cung in Hanoi, in 1993. Mr. Hieu traveled from his home in Virginia to meet the poet Nguyen Chi Thien, who he had published in a book entitled Tieàng
Voïng Töø Ñaùy Vöïc (‘Echo From the Abyss') in August, 1980. The poet Phung Cung died in Hanoi in 1997, after Nguyen Chi Thien had immmigrated to the United States. Nguyen Chi Thien was released from prison by the Communist regime after international pressure organized by Amnesty International in 1991.
