On Friday, September 21st, Cambodian Americans gathered in front of the White House asking for the release of the Buddhist Monk, The Venerable Tim Sakhorn, who was recently incarcerated in Vietnam; for the restoration of religious freedom and human rights in Vietnam; and for an end to the persecution of the indigenous Khmer Krom (Cambodian) population and Monks in Vietnam.

February 8th, 2007 - Two hundred Khmer Krom Buddhist monks peacefully demonstrated in Soc Treang, Vietnam, requesting religious freedom.  The Vietnamese government responded by arresting and imprisoned nineteen Monks and five were given prison sentences for 2 to 4 years.

Feb 27 – Responding to the arrests in Viet Nam, Buddhist monks living in Cambodia Peacefully demonstrated in front of the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh.  The Venerable Eang Sok Thoeun, who participated, was found in a temple dead with his throat slit, and Cambodian authorities refused to allow his parents to organize a formal Buddhist funeral service for him.

The Venerable Tim Sakhorn and his whole family are Cambodian citizens.  They fled the communist oppression in Vietnam in January 1979 – nearly three decades ago – and  received legal citizenship from the Cambodian Government authorities soon after.  Tim Sakhorn was ordained as a Buddhist monk at the Phnom Den North Pagoda temple in Takeo province on July 9, 1991, and selected as Abbot (chief of monks) there in 2000.

Soon after the demonstrations, the Venerable Tim Sakhorn was kidnapped by Vietnamese and Cambodian agents and illegally taken to Vietnam.  O
n August 1, 2007, the Hanoi regime, admitted through its official websites that the Venerable Tim Sakhorn has been imprisoned (location unknown) – ironically charged with crossing into Vietnam without having any proper legal travel document.

We call upon the President and Congress to urge Vietnam to immediately free the Venerable Tim Sakhorn and other imprisoned Monks, and to stop the repression  of and grant religious freedom to the Khmer Krom people in Vietnam.

The Demonstration and Candlelight Vigil was jointly organized by:

  • Cambodian Americans for Human Rights and Democracy (CARHAD), Tung Yap: 703-675-3997; Mong Heng: 703-256-3295.
  • Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation (KKF), Berong Thach: 408-406-6845; Thach Ngoc Thach: 856-655-9254.
