PRESS RELEASE

Winnipeg gala - $55,000 raised for the Vietnamese Boat People Museum

The gala held by the Free Vietnamese Association of Manitoba (FVAM) in Winnipeg September 7, 2007 in support of the Vietnamese Boat People Museum Project in Ottawa has been a smashing success.

Featuring two well-known Vietnamese singers from the U.S. – Minh Tuyet and Truong Vu – this event attracted 650 people, will all tickets sold out well in advance.  Among the guests in attendance were: Flor Marcelino, Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for Wellington; Harvey Smith, Winnipeg City Councillor; Brian Klaponski, President and CEO of Carta International Inc. and his wife; Vincent Buetti, FVAM legal counsel and his wife; and Can D. Le, Commissioner for External Affairs of the Vietnamese Canadian Federation and Vietnamese Boat People Museum Project Leader, and his wife.

Following the greetings by FVAM President Ba Nguyen, Mrs. Marcelino and Councillor Smith expressed their admiration at the achievements of the Vietnamese community in Winnipeg, from the establishment of the Saigon Cultural Centre and Housing Project to the multitude of cultural, social, and political activities over the last 30 years.  Dr. Can Le then conveyed the Vietnamese Canadian Federation’s gratitude for the efforts taken by Mr. Ba Nguyen and his team in promoting and supporting the Museum Project, the contribution of Vietnamese businesses in Winnipeg, and the artists’ performances.

The outcome of the gala exceeded everyone’s expectations: more than $55,000 was raised, including a pledge from Carte International to contribute $10,000 a year for 4 years to the Museum Project.

Launched in December 2005 by the Vietnamese Canadian Federation, the Vietnamese Boat People Museum aims at: (1) Presenting the historical facts of the quest for freedom of Vietnamese refugees, the majority of whom were the boat people, and their reception worldwide;   and (2) Showcasing the contribution of the Vietnamese community to the resettlement countries.  With an estimated budget of $2 million, the museum is scheduled to be completed by 2010.

So far, two galas have been held this year to raise funds for this project: the first one on January 28, 2007 in San Jose, California, and the second one on March 31 in Ottawa.  Similar events will be held in other cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, etc.
