RE: To Call Hanoi Authorities To Release Pro-Democracy Activists

Vietnam – September 10, 2008. There have been numerous of arrests in Viet Nam from Ha Noi city to Hai Phong and Hai Duong provinces. Writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia was arrested at his home in Hai Phong, his whereabouts remain unknown. Same day, poet Tran Van Thach and university student Ngo Quynh were detained when both on their way to Thai Ha in Ha Noi.

At the same time, Mr. Pham Van Troi and Mr. Nguyen Van Tuc were arrested in their home towns.  Many police officers came to Troi’s house. After finishing their house search, police took Troi away.

Vietnamese pro-democracy activists have been suppressed and arrested for their peaceful expression.  Recently, many banners denounce the governement's corruption and call for democracy in Vietnam were hung in large cities of Vietnam including Hanoi, Hai Phong and Hai Duong provinces. These banners urge for a political reform in Vietnam.  Last week, university students in Hanoi have distributed leaflets calling for demonstration in front of China embassy at 46 Hoang Dieu, Hanoi to protest the so-called “shame day of September 14”, a referring day Sep. 14, 1958 when Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Van Dong has signed letter to acknowledge of China ’s rights on the disputed Spratly and Paracel Islands.

- We call on Vietnam 's government to release Writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia, Poet Tran Duc Thach, Mr. Ngo Quynh, Pham Van Troi and Nguyen Van Tuc immediately.

- We call on Vietnam ‘s government to release Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, also known as Blogger Dieu Cay, for his protest of China ’s invasion. His sentencing of two and a half years imprisonment on September 10, 2008 for the so called “tax invasion” is outrageous and unacceptable.

- We call on Vietnam 's government to respect human rights, to end arbitrary detention of pro-democracy activists solely for having publicly supported democracy.

The People's Democratic Party strongly protests and condemns the Vietnamese authorities for their recent detentions. We urgently ask that they release these pro-democracy activists immediately.

Respectively,

Nam Tran

Spokesperson of the People’s Democratic Party
